2008 Lamborghini Reventon
2008 Lamborghini Reventon

We run with Lamborghini’s $1.4 million bull. Only twenty copies will be made of this Murcielago LP640-based supercar, and all are spoken for.
Like most Italians, Moreno Conti is a man prone to hand gestures. “Yesterday,” he says, his hands swooping toward my face, “parking in the Via Internationale in Bologna, all of Bologna, it was like this.” He raises his arms again, elbows dancing, and brings both fists down toward his belt buckle. I have no idea what this movement means, but it’s followed immediately by more gestures, most of them too quick to decipher. He quickly realizes he’s losing me and wraps things up: “Much handling,” he says, hands on his hips, “for the tour bus.”

2009 Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4

The redesigned Gallardo is here and it gets a numerical name: 560 metric hp and all-wheel drive. Oh, and we built one.
Presented to the public at the 2008 Geneva auto show for the very first time is the new Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4. Somewhere in the gray area between a “face-lift” and an “all-new car,” the LP560-4 replaces the current Gallardo when it goes on sale this spring. (At that time, the Gallardo Superleggera will be discontinued, although the Gallardo Spyder will continue in its current form.)

2009 Lamborghini Gallardo

Lamborghini invites our Jason Cammisa to build the first-ever Gallardo LP560-4. Everyone survives.
I turn around and see something so upsetting that I almost drop a differential on the ground. Someone is affixing a black and gold Lamborghini badge to the hood of a completely naked Gallardo body within seconds of its arrival on the production line. Already?! It doesn’t even have an engine in it! No, No, No! This is Italy, the birthplace of opera, for crying out loud! The Lamborghini badge is supposed to be screwed on during a formal crowning ceremony in an incense-filled booth at the end of the assembly line. A teary-eyed Italian engineer should decree the vehicle worthy by signing the build sheet with an oxblood fountain pen while white-gloved courtiers carefully apply the badge to the hood. Onlookers should weep.
